Welcome
The Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate and Professional Education (OVPR) promotes excellence in research at Rutgers and provides oversight for the education of the next generation of researchers.
Research is fundamental to the mission of Rutgers and enhances its education and service missions.
Education, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, is delivered by faculty directly involved in the discovery of new knowledge.
Rutgers’ students and faculty bring their expertise to communities throughout New Jersey, the nation, and the world, reaching out to elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as to government, foundations, and the corporate community.
In addition to discovery–based research, Rutgers is increasingly involved in commercialization of research through the transfer of new technologies to industry, contributing to the economic development of New Jersey and the U.S.
From the discovery of streptomycin—the cure for tuberculosis—to the technology behind Ask.com, Rutgers continues to make a tremendous impact in the commercial world.
In fiscal year 2009, more than $391 million of research at Rutgers was sponsored by the federal government, state government, corporations, and foundations, providing research experiences for undergraduates, support for graduate assistants and postdoctoral researchers, and bringing state–of–the–art equipment and facilities to our campuses.

Some Recent Initiatives
- Together with the Rutgers Business School, the VP of Research has created an institute, BEST (Business, Engineering, Science and Technology) to educate students in entrepreneurship, and to encourage and assist Rutgers faculty, students, and alumni to create technology–based companies.
- The Rutgers Distinguished Faculty Seminar Series is designed to showcase the scholarship of Rutgers faculty to the Rutgers community.
- The Office of Proposal Development, part of the Office of the VP for Research, was created to assist Rutgers faculty, center and institute directors, and school deans with development of large multidisciplinary proposals and to promote best practices in proposal development. A new job title, Grant Facilitator, has been created for employees who assist faculty with proposal development.
