DoD: Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI)

The DoD Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative BAA has been released. It is available at http://www.onr.navy.mil/02/BAA/docs/10-002.pdf. White papers are due Dec 11, 2009. The MURI program supports basic science and/or engineering research at U.S. institutions of higher education (hereafter referred to as "universities") that is of potential interest to DoD. Proposals almost always involve multiple universities. Funded projects from last year are ion the web at http://www.defenselink.mil/news/may2009/FY09MURIPressReleaseTableFinal.pdf. The program is focused on multidisciplinary research efforts that intersect more than one traditional science and engineering discipline to address issues of critical concern to the DoD. The FY 2010 MURI competition is for the 30 topics listed below

  1. Optical Metamaterials
  2. Adaptive Cognitive Maps for Autonomous Systems

ACLS: Stimulus for Humanities Job Market

The American Council of Learned Societies is creating 50 fellowships for new Ph.D.'s in the humanities, who will be eligible for two years of work at top colleges and universities. At a time when many of those on the job market in the humanities are scrambling to piece together adjunct slots with minimal pay and benefits, these fellows will receive $50,000 plus a $5,000 research or travel allowance annually, health insurance, and a one-time $1,500 moving allowance. And their teaching load can't exceed three semester-long courses per year.

See http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2009/10/13/fellows for more info and http://www.acls.org/ for the American Council of Learned Societies website
