DoD: Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI)
The DoD Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative BAA has been
released. It is available at
http://www.onr.navy.mil/02/BAA/docs/10-002.pdf.
White papers are due Dec 11, 2009. The MURI program supports basic science
and/or engineering research at U.S. institutions of higher education
(hereafter referred to as "universities") that is of potential interest to
DoD. Proposals almost always involve multiple universities. Funded projects
from last year are ion the web at
http://www.defenselink.mil/news/may2009/FY09MURIPressReleaseTableFinal.pdf.
The program is focused on multidisciplinary research efforts that intersect
more than one traditional science and engineering discipline to address
issues of critical concern to the DoD. The FY 2010 MURI competition is for
the 30 topics listed below
- Optical Metamaterials
- Adaptive Cognitive Maps for Autonomous Systems
- Non-linear Mediums Converting Frequencies of Propagating E/M and Pressure Waves
- Biofuels: Microbial Communities, Biogeochemistry and Surface Interactions
- Design, Synthesis, and Characterization of Electro-Active Polymers for Dielectric Energy Storage
- Reasoning for Image Understanding in Uncertain Environments
- Fundamental Study of High- and Low-K Dielectrics for III-V Electronic Devices
- Provably-Safe Perception-Based Control for Autonomous UAS Operations around Complex, Unstructured Terrain
- Dynamical Systems Theory in 4D Geophysical Fluid Dynamics
- Hyperspectral, Radar and EO/IR Signatures in the Littorals
- Novel Catalytic Mechanisms for the Chemical Reduction of Carbon Dioxide to Energy-Dense Liquids
- Third Order Nonlinear Optical Organics
- Fundamental Processes in High-Temperature Gas-Surface Interactions
- Propagation of Ultrashort Laser Pulses through Transparent Media
- Superconducting Semiconductors
- Human-Machine Adversarial Networks
- Biologically-Engineering of Adherent / Spectroscopically Interrogated Microstructures
- Control of Information Collection and Fusion
- Stable Metrics for Global Inference in Social Networks to Predict Collective Behavior
- Solid State Cooling
- Neuronal Behavior in Primary Blast
- Identifying and Extracting the Mathematical Signatures of Prokaryotic Activity in DNA; Developing a Theoretical Foundation for Predicting DNA Stability
- Tomography of Social Networks of Asymmetric Adversaries
- Adaptive Perception and Agile Autonomy in Severe Environments
- Structured Modeling for Low-Density Languages
- Directed Self-Assembly of Reconfigurable Materials
- "Atomtronics": A generalized electronics

ACLS: Stimulus for Humanities Job Market
The American Council of Learned Societies is creating 50 fellowships for new
Ph.D.'s in the humanities, who will be eligible for two years of work at top
colleges and universities. At a time when many of those on the job market in
the humanities are scrambling to piece together adjunct slots with minimal
pay and benefits, these fellows will receive $50,000 plus a $5,000 research
or travel allowance annually, health insurance, and a one-time $1,500 moving
allowance. And their teaching load can't exceed three semester-long courses
per year.
See http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2009/10/13/fellows for more info and
