Parking is available in Lots 54 or 68.
This presentation will
introduce the audience to the world of ceramics and their methods of
manufacture. Unfortunately, ceramic manufacturing is far from being a green
process due to the energy required for drying and firing and resultant carbon
dioxide greenhouse gases. The concern about global warming has future
legislation focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The proposed
legislation will have profound impact on the economic stability of ceramics
industries unless actions are taken to address these environmental problems.
This seminar will summarize some of the green ceramic manufacturing activities
ongoing worldwide that seek to address these issues.

Refworks/COS – New Funding Opportunity Search Tool
Rutgers has recently subscribed to an
outstanding new funding opportunity search tool,
Refworks/COS.
This new tool allows faculty and staff to quickly and easily search for funding
opportunities from more than 25,000 records, and then quickly filter the search
results into a manageable amount of results. Keyword and agency searches can
also be saved, and Refworks/COS will send weekly email updates of new funding
opportunities matching your search criteria, in effect, putting your search for
funding opportunities on autopilot. To illustrate the breadth and depth
of coverage Michael Mueller conducted a quick search (approximately 15 minutes)
for funding opportunities and faculty awards, including opportunities from
foundations and less accessed governmental agencies such as the Dept. of
Commerce or Dept. of Justice, which resulted in the following representative
opportunities:
Art and Humanities
Catalysis
Education policy, particularly K-12
Cultural History
Cognitive Science

I strongly encourage you to visit http://pivot.cos.com/rhome from any computer on any Rutgers campus, and click on “New User” to log in and
begin your own searches. Helpful tutorials are also available on the
Refworks/COS site. Contact Michael Mueller (micmuell@vpr.rutgers.edu) for more

Call for Reviewers Busch Biomedical Awards!
Are you interested in serving as a
reviewer for the 2010 Busch Biomedical Grant Program? We are in the
process of identifying highly qualified, volunteer reviewers for this year’s
program. A vibrant peer-review process, full of capable and qualified
reviewers, is vital to the health of scientific research and the Busch
Biomedical Grant Program. As someone from NIH recently said “If good people,
people who know good science when they see it…don’t volunteer, then the job of
reviewing will be done by the inexperienced, the inept, and/or the inbred.”
Please contact Mrs. Amy Grabowski (avpradmn@rci.rutgers.edu)
if you are interested in volunteering.

NIH Shortened and Restructured Application Forms and Instructions
The NIH has recently announced that all applications for proposals
with due dates on or after January 25, 2010 require the use of
new forms and new instructions. These changes are part of a new
NIH-wide effort to enhance and improve the peer review process. An
overview of these changes can be found by clicking on Enhancing Peer Review at NIH (http://enhancing-peer-review.nih.gov/index.html).
Important features of these changes include enhanced review criteria, a new 1-9 point scoring system which includes scores for individual criteria, new templates for structured critiques, and identification and clustering of proposals from new and
early stage investigators. In
addition, the NIH has issued new application instructions and new application forms, which include shorter page limits.
To ensure that proposers are using the correct new forms, they
should return to the FOA or the new parent announcement issued in December 2009 to download new forms
Proposers are encouraged to read carefully and understand fully all of the new
application instructions to ensure a successful submission. The new forms
and instructions are contained within the Restructured Application Forms and Instructions for
Submissions for FY2011 Funding (Notice Number: NOT-OD-09-149). Training and Communication Resources are also available to assist proposers.
Please contact your department’s Grant Specialist in ORSP as soon
as possible if you are planning to submit an application to NIH for further
assistance.
