Distinguished Seminar Series: Computational and Data-Enabled Science and Engineering

Computational and Data-Enabled Science and Engineering (CDS&E) is an intellectual discipline that brings together core areas of science and engineering, computer science, and computational and applied mathematics in a concerted effort to use cyberinfrastructure (CI) for scientific discovery and engineering innovations. It is clear that CDS&E has become a central theme in the national research and education agenda, and it is critically important that Rutgers University respond by establishing a core competency in this emerging discipline.

The goal of this distinguished seminar series is to bring national CDS&E leaders to Rutgers to talk about their vision and research. The currently scheduled speakers are listed below. The talks will be held at the Fiber Optics Auditorium, 607 Taylor Road on Busch Campus, and will begin at 10:30 AM. There will be an informal reception before the talks at 10AM. Additional details about the talks will be posted at http://nsfcac.rutgers.edu/cdse/seminars/.

Demystifying DoD Research Funding: Sept 14, 2011 TODAY at 10

Topic:Demystifying DoD Research Funding
When:September 14, 2011 at 10:00am
Where:CoRE Room 701, Busch Campus, http://rumaps.rutgers.edu/?id=C71962

From the outside, the DoD science and technology funding infrastructure can appear complex and obscure. Without guidance it is difficult to answer some basic questions such as: Who decides which research topics are important to the DoD? What process determines how DoD research funds are allocated? How can I access this information? And most importantly, how can I maximize the likelihood of obtaining funding for my research? Formulated from experience both as a contract researcher and as a government program manager, this talk will cover some of the information, ideas, disciplines, and techniques that can help demystify DoD research funding.

Dr. Dev Palmer is a Program Manager at the US ARL Army Research Office in Research Triangle Park, NC. He is responsible for extramural basic research in electromagnetics, microwaves, and power. From 1991 to 2001, he served on the technical staff at the MCNC Research and Development Institute, ultimately as Director of Electronic and Optical Packaging. He is engaged in antenna research as a Member of the Graduate Faculty in the Duke University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and occasionally teaches introductory electromagnetics. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Duke in 1991, holds an Amateur Extra class radio operators license, is a registered Professional Engineer, a member of AOC, ASA, MRS, Sigma Xi, and USNC-URSI, and a Senior Member of the IEEE.

Webinar on Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability

This mail is to invite you to attend a webinar given by NSF program officers on the recently released solicitations for NSF’s SEES initiative. SEES (Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability) specifically targets inter-disciplinary research and education on various facets of sustainability.

The webinar will provide an overview of the SEES initiative and discuss details of recently released solicitations that are of particular interest to the CISE community. The main purpose of the webinar is to help the CISE community to take advantage of the new interdisciplinary research funding opportunities for FY12 in the emerging area of sustainability.

NSF will hold two webinars with essentially the same content. In order to attend, you must register for the session that suits you best, using the URL given below, by the specified deadline. After your registration is accepted, you will get an email with a URL to join the meeting. Please be sure to join a few minutes before the start of the webinar. This system does not establish a voice connection on your computer; instead, your acceptance message will have a toll-free phone number that you will be prompted to call after joining.

Please note that the registration has been set up as a manual process; therefore, do not expect an immediate acceptance. In the event of the number of requests exceed the capacity, some requests may be denied.

Session1:
Sept 27, 2011, 15:00 – 16:45 EDT (12:00 – 13:45 PDT)
Registration deadline: Sept 26, 2011, 23:59 PDT
URL:
